This Year's Model Updates:

For 2006, the MX-5 gets its first top-to-bottom redesign since its launch in 1989. The roadster gains a roomier cockpit but still tips the scales at under 2,500 pounds. Beneath the hood, the MX-5 benefits from an all-new 170-horsepower, 2.0-liter engine. Side-impact airbags and ABS are now standard across all trims.

Pros:
  • Huge fun factor, precise steering and handling, low base price, economical to operate.
Cons:
  • A few questionable interior plastics, still snug for large adults.

  • Fun, Fun, Fun - 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata

This is the 4th new Miata that Ive owned. Ive had at least one of all 3 body styles. This one is great, but the trunk opening almost made me keep my 1999. Its just too small. And the lack of a spare tire WAS a problem for me when I had a blowout at 9pm at night and the flat fix kit didnt work. AAA towed me to a motel and then came back to get me the next morning and towed me to the Mazda dealer (the only place that said they had a tire that fit). Fortunately, they were able to repair the tire. Overall the additional power of the 2006 and the new features were the deciding factors for me.

Have driven the sport model for 2 months now. Opted for the 6 speed automatic since I commute in traffic and I didnt want to go back to shifting. The automatic is great with the clutchless shifter and the steering wheel paddles. This car handles like a go kart and has very quick acceleration even with the automatic. Down shifts are easy either with the pedal or the shifter. Top works easily and stows neatly. Fit and finish are excellent. This car is really fun to drive on day trips but long hauls would not be for me. It really makes my commute fun instead of drudgery.

  • 2006 Miata, 6 Speed Automatic - 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Ive owned a Miata since 1992. The 2006 is the best ever with a few minor issues. I got the 6 speed automatic -- it works fine in both full and manual automatic but loses some performance to the manual transmission (no surprise). Fit and finish is perfect. AM radio reception is poor -- lots of static; havent taken it in yet. Fun to drive and looks great. Driver seat is too low for me. Excellent on the highway with the top down and wind buffer in use. 25 mpg on first two tanks of mixed driving. Excellent dealer car knowledge and service.

This car has very good driving characteristics. Fun to drive, great cornering abilities. Affordable and aggressive new body style. Everyday car or weekends, whatever - this car is a blast.

  • Better than a Sky or Solstice! - 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata

I just bought my used 2006 GT a few weeks ago with only 22K miles on it. Ive driven a number of two-seater convertibles, mostly Honda del Sols and one Toyota MR2 Spyder. The Miata definitely feels like more car -- the leather seats seem solid and luxurious, and I love the dashboard layout, redundant layout controls, remote entry, carpeting and cloth top. The trunk is practical, although not as large as the del Sols. The only real drawback so far has been the gas mileage. My del Sol averaged 32-33 mpg in mostly city driving; first two fill-ups with the Miata have shown 24.9 and 25.9 (the second with about 50% freeway driving). Thats in line with published figures, but is still not great.

This is the 3rd Miata weve owned & the best. Weve had all 3 body types from pop-up headlights to this current model. We traded a 03 Cobra in for this car and though I miss the full power of the Cobra, I really havent looked back. A little bigger inside for the legs & plenty of extra storage. The interior is nicely laid out, easy to reach just about anything yet gives me room to myself. Plenty of get up and go. We opted for the automatic this time with paddle shifters, this is more fun than a just about anything you could drive. Zoom-Zoom.

It has rained ever since I picked up the car. So far (227 miles), regardless of the condition of the road, the car has been responsive, sure-footed and extremely predictable. No leaks. FUN! It is comfortable. My back doesnt hurt after 70 miles of bumps and dips and I dont feel cramped with the top up. Top is extremely easy to put up and down while sitting in the drivers seat. There is a large blind spot with the top up however. The quality of the interior appears very good. No flaws in the finish. Shifter is short and precise. I have a grin permanently plastered on my face. :-).

Traded an 04 Ultra Classic and havent looked back. The MX5 is a 2-dr/4wh replacement. It has all of the thrill of driving with the wind without having to worry about the weather. Top up/top down takes a few seconds. I have the Gr Touring with 7-spkr Bose system. Sound is great all the time. Cloth brown top with 6-spd manual. This car is by far the most fun vehicle i have driven. Past vehicles include Audi A6 & A4 Cab. I do wish there was some better answer for spare than Fix a Flat and run flat tires. Mileage has been 28 MPG combined. All in all it is hard to imagine a replacement for the HD but this car is IT. Decide on the top up/down when you get in the car. Simple

  • Best Fun Factor on 4 wheels - 2006 Miata - 2006 Mazda MX-5 Miata

These cars are so awesome. Fun, fun, fun, and reliable as can be. Cheap to fill up (small tank). Dont buy one of these if envious stares annoy you. Dont buy one of these if youd much prefer to spend a lot of money on a true roadster. Dont buy one of these if you are on a first name basis with you auto mechanic and prefer to stay that way. I dont have the top of the line leather version of the car, but slapped on some upgraded 17" alloy wheels, and great tires ( Michelin Pilot Super Sport), and handling actually improves dramatically - didnt think that was possible.

This is a great car. It is fun to drive. The interior space is great for a small car. Ive been driving it for a month and have no complaints.
